Burglary Prevention With windows open, gardens in use and many people heading away for weekends or holidays, summer can create opportunities for opportunist thieves. A few simple steps can help keep your home safe. Keep your home secure. Lock doors and accessible windows when you leave the room or head out. If you want fresh air, consider using window restrictors so you can ventilate safely. Don't forget side gates, patio doors and garages – these are often overlooked during the summer months. Motion-sensor lighting can still be an effective deterrent during the evening and overnight. Protect what's outside. Bikes, garden tools, BBQs and ladders are often left out in warm weather. Store them away or secure them when not in use to help prevent theft and stop them being used to gain access to your home. Make technology work for you If you have a doorbell camera or CCTV, check it's working properly and covers key access points. Heading away? Enable alerts so you can keep an eye on your property while you're gone. Going on holiday? Wait until you get home before sharing holiday photos on social media. Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your post, move your bins or keep an eye on your property. Use timers or smart plugs to switch lights on in the evening to make your home look occupied.

A few simple steps can help keep your vehicle and belongings safe: Lock it every time Even if you're only popping away for a few minutes, always lock your vehicle, close all windows and sunroofs, and take your keys with you.
Keep valuables out of sight Phones, handbags, wallets, sunglasses and even charging cables can tempt thieves. If you can, take them with you. If not, lock them away before you arrive at your destination.
Park smart Choose busy, well-lit areas where possible. At home, park in your garage or on your driveway and make sure your vehicle and garage are both locked. Protect your keys Keep car keys away from doors and windows at home. If you have a keyless vehicle, consider using a signal-blocking pouch to help prevent relay theft. Add an extra layer of security Steering wheel locks, alarms, immobilisers and GPS trackers are all effective ways to deter thieves and improve the chances of recovering a stolen vehicle. Don't leave paperwork behind Avoid storing your insurance documents or vehicle registration paperwork inside your car, as these can be used to help commit further crime. Never leave dogs in a hot car Even with the windows open or parked in the shade, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to dangerous levels within minutes. If you're heading somewhere your dog can't come with you, it's safest to leave them at home where they'll be cool and comfortable. A few moments before you walk away could save you a lot of time and expense later. Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine!

New operation launched to disrupt illegal e-bike and e-scooter use
Sussex Police has launched a new operation dedicated to tackling the illegal use of e-bike and e-scooters. This is not only in response to ongoing community concerns but also following an increase in reported incidents in the county. Officers from the force’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams, working together with the Roads Policing Unit and Fatal Five Unit, will provide education, engagement and enforcement to crackdown on the issue as part of Operation Scramble. In the 12 months to June 2026, Sussex Police received a total of 2,504 reports of e-bikes and e-scooters being ridden illegally. This is an increase of 53.7 per cent from the 1,629 reports received the previous 12 months. Of these, 25.6 per cent relate to antisocial or dangerous riding, and 51.8 per cent relate to suspected drug activity. These reports are in addition to incidents responded to by officers out on patrol. Superintendent Jo Grantham, head of roads policing for Surrey Police and Sussex Police, said: “The illegal use of e-bikes and e-scooters continues to be a problem in Sussex, and this is reflected by the number of calls and intelligence reports we have received from the public. “The vast majority of these reports are related to criminal activity, which is a concern we are continually seeking to address. However, irrespective of the circumstances, the bottom line is e-scooters are illegal to use in public– unless through an authorised rental scheme – and e-bikes must meet legal requirements, both can pose a significant risk to all road users when used illegally or irresponsibly. “We are running this dedicated operation to step up our response to this issue, and our teams will continue to respond to illegal usage of e-vehicle 365 days a year.” Read full story here New operation launched to disrupt illegal e-bike and e-scooter use | Sussex Police
